The whole litter shown below. This litter has contributed to color genetic research substantially, with numerous important and even ground-breaking new information resulting from the genetic contribution & committment to research that Randi Kerlinger especially worked to see happen. The latest is a new color gene found (K locus, a beta-defensin) published in SCIENCE OCT 18, 2007. The famous "couch potato puppies" photos (see below) was included.
This is just the latest paper and even "just" the latest
gene to be discovered and/or reported on that began with this litter. A litter now famous to geneticists and maybe
still just "notorious" in some Dane circles, as this was a black x harlequin breeding that produced masked
fawn puppies. This demonstrates that breeders not only being willing to "admit" to a recessive (i.e.
not hide it), but be willing to share the DNA here, ended with thes dogs having made a permanent positive contribution
not only to the Great Dane breed, but to all breeds, and to the in the advancement of science. Now that is something
to hang your hat on? And it is a lesson in how genetic data, even from unwanted traits, can be used to benefit
us all, when it is rationally (rather than emotionally) approached.
