& Venerable Dane (10+ years old).
"Pirate"
PIRATE IS THE FIRST GREAT DANE TO RECEIVE THE CHAMPION OF HEALTH
AWARD!
|
|
Pirate is AFAWK still the only Great
Dane that has been ranked in conformation, agility, obedience & rally. He finished his Championship with back
to back Majors from BBEx (Bred By). He was an easy dog to show & finished handily as a young adult, winning
every weekend shown from start to finish, & has not only taken Breed wins, but is a BISS and Group winning
Harlequin, & was in the Top 25 the year he finished--all breeder-owner-handled. Pirate was the first Excellent/Open
agility titled Champion male in the breed & has his AXJ and two AX legs. He is also obedience titled &
was ranked in the Top Five for Obedience in repeated years, having achieved his CD with an average score of 195,
as did one of his sons, the National Specialty High In Trial dog Shaymus (see below). Pirate
is a GDCA Versatility Award winner like his dam & one of the select few Danes in the GDCA Hall of Fame. He
was always especially admired for (& offers his offspring) his correct front assembly, good turn of stifle,
hard back, & breathtaking movement. Pirate was also always a tail-wagging crowd pleaser. Pirate, like his sisters
Picabo & Fanny, have been active TDI Therapy Dog volunteers for years. The year he turned a Veteran (2004),
he achieved four more titles & was ranked both by points (#3-GDCA) and by dogs defeated (#9-Delaney) in Obedience
& was still ranked in the top 10 for agility. In 2005, he not only continued with his obedience career, starting
his CDX hunt, but took up 5-10 K (kilometer) competitive runs as a veteran dog, running at least 4-6 miles 3 times
weekly, & has become a regional legend and favorite "player." He also got his Rally Novice and Advanced
titles and a leg towards his Rally Excellent while a veteran. (Click here for photos.)
Pirate is a proven producer of show-marked Harlequins, Mantles _&_ Blacks; Champion stock here & in Europe,
but he has get also titled and ranked nationally in various dogsports (from obedience to agility). He is a Venerable
Dane (documented as living more than 10 years) from two Champion & Venerable parents. CHIC#13779: OFA hips
Good, cardiac clear at 10 years old, thyroid normal, CERF clear, +DNA certified, microchipped. Ch. AMHERST-

O-NAC NJC CHROMA Trompe L'oeil,
CD, RN, OA, NAJ, NJP, CGC, TDIA & Venerable Dane (11+ years old).
"Picabo"
|
Picabo, (pronounced Peek-a-boo), Pirate's
sister has clearly demonstrated her parents' versatility with multiple agility titles in both AKC & NADAC,
an obedience and a rally title, as well as is a TDIA therapy dog twice over (with two different handlers) ans was
ACE (AKC Award of Canine Excellence) nominated in the Therapy Dog category. She is a Venerable Dane (documented
as living more than 10 years) from two Champion & Venerable parents. She was ranked in agility for 2001, was
the first O-NAC titled Dane and one of four to achieve the OA in 2001. She has also served, since since she was
a year old, as a demonstration dog at obedience classes, and as one of the most exceptional therapy dogs we have
seen in a 20+ year career. Picabo was nominated in 2001 for the AKC ACE award in the Therapy Dog division. Picabo
and Pirate are the first littermates to achieve agility titles and therapy titles. She whelped to the BISS CH Dreamspinner's
Cash'N'Carry in March of 2002 and then was spayed (click here for
further information on that litter). Her pups even at 9 mo. were already beginning to gain points and certifications
& several were titled at 2 years. Three of the seven pups from this 2002 litter are still out competing in
various venues as veterans. She has more than one puppy with a breed first achievement, and several ranked in various
dog sports, plus a CH/CD daughter. Picabo was retired from Excellent level agility due to the after effects of
a brown recluse spider bite. She is now co-owned by and lives with Joseph Whitehouse, a proficient junior handler
who trials her in obedience, rally and juniors/preferred agility. Joey has put three titles on her himself! She
has a page shared with her junior handler here. Picabo lived
11.5 healthy years, succuming to a pancreatic tumor in 2010. PICABO has Champion offspring, who have Champion offspring,
who have Champion offspring....and she boasts get ranked in every AKC dog sport just like her brother Pirate. 1998-2010

Champion CHROMA A Kiss For Luck, CD, CGC
"Frenchie"
|
Frenchie was part of our "New
England contingent" and is a Picabo daughter, also mother to Champion and other titled Danes. She was the
only puppy bred from Picabo's only litter (& she herself was only bred once). A daughter of Picabo & Cash,
CH/CD Frenchie was owned, trained, bred and shown by Al and Judi Arsenault of Granite Danes. She finished completely
owner-handled by Judi Arsenault, gaining two 4 pt. majors and a 5 pt. major reserve from breeder-judges along the
way, then she and Al finished her CD with two placements, a breed Highest Scoring, and a final 193.5, getting her
ranked in the TOP TEN for Obedience in 2004 (Delaney system). Frenchie was bred as a three year old to BISS CH
Sasdania's The Navigator (Pilot) and so carried on Picabo's legacy through her only litter, called the "French
Revolution"(see below). We lost Frenchie in 2006 to TBD (tick-borne disease); her memorial page is here.
Her brother Orion (owned by Carrie Burns, M.D.) has more than
a dozen titles & is on the way to still more. Herr sister Charm is
the breed world record holder in "air dog" sports & is tracking certified, and sister Rosie is the 11th Dane in history to gain a UDX & is now working on her Masters Obedience
title (as a veteran). Both Frenchie and her sister Jewel are CHIC certified: OFA hips Good, cardiac clear, thyroid
normal, CERF clear, +DNA certified, microchipped. (Frenchie's sister Jewel was pointed & hoping to finish her
Championship in 2005, but was side-lined from conformation competiton by a chronic tail injury that required her
to be docked, and has now been spayed and retired to a private home.) the other two pups (both merle boys) are
happy home companions. THis litter has its own pedigree page and their own litter page, so check those links out to learn more on the Gamble litter. 2002-2006.
Frenchie is BISS CH Dreamspinner's Cash-N-Carry x O-NAC NJC CHROMA Trompe L'oeil CD, OA, NAJ, NJP, TDIA, CGC.
Frenchie is the mother & grandmother of (AKC) Champions, as well as dogs titled "behind" (just

BISS Champion CHROMA Maid to
Order, CGC (TDI) "Maud"
|
Pretty Maud is another one of our
homebred Champions. A breeder-judge's favorite, Maud was a puppy Sweeps
winner and finished her Championship with a BISS & BOBs from the classes, taking most of her points at Specialty
show weekends. She defeated 6 Specials (including 3 Top20 Danes) to take a Best In Specialty Show from Open Harl,
was BOW twice at Specialties (& had 3 major Specialty RWBs when young), & then finished with two four point
majors taken in a weekend (defeating 26 bitches to finish). Maud has been OFA Cardiac cleared, is OFA Good (hip),
CERF clear & thyroid normal. For more photos of Maud click here. She & her
brother Guidon (see below) are also certified TDI Therapy dogs, and have their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certification.
It turned out pretty Maud's talents did not include making babies, so one of her loyal fans, in lieu of a puppy
from her, asked for her. Maud now lives her dream life with Mary and Greg Lugo as a California beach bunny, but
comes out to do a bit of free style and show as a Veteran. She was in the ribbons at the 2005 GDCA National Specialty.
CH Maud is CHIC certified: OFA hip Good, cardiac clear, thyroid normal, CERF clear, & microchipped, DNA'd.
1999- Maud is: AOM BISS Ch. MICHAELDANE JB DGN M T POCKETS NTL x Ch. MICHAELDANE JB ADVENT, CD.

sp-HIT CHROMA Pride of the Regiment,
UDX, TDIA-OV, CGC, RCV "Guidon" |
Guidon, (pronounced GUIDE-ON) is Maud's
brother & was named for the standard (flag) bearer in a military formation (because of his black leg looking
like it is always "leading the parade"). Guidon lives with and is trained by Dina Whitehouse of Ft. Bliss
Texas (co-owned by the breeder). He won his Companion Dog title in three straight trials with Dina, and finished
his Companion Dog Excellent title, all legs with placements. He finished his Utility title with a First and a 197,
and promptly went on that same weekend to gain back-to-back UDX legs, and completed his UDX one year to the date
from when he started it when already over 7 years old! By that unusual achievement, he became the 10th Dane and
2nd male in AKC history to achieve the Utility Dog Excellent title, and he has a specialty High In Trial as well
to his credit. He was ranked #3 in Open for 2004 by points (GDCA) & #5 overall by dogs defeated (Delaney system).
Ranked in the Top 5 again in 2005, 2006 found him the #1 or #2 Utility Dane consistently. He'll be 10 this summer
and has now retired to rest<G> on his laurels. His young son Dare (shown below) is already following in his
footsteps. Of obvious breed quality, Guidon was only shown briefly in conformation by his co-owner Scott Thompson,
who was deceased both suddenly & when young, so his dog then turned to obedience with his live-in love Dina.
Guidon, like his half-sister Picabo, is an outstanding therapy dog and he also has achieved his TDIA-OV Therapy
Dog title (one of the first three Danes ever to get it), & is a certified Red Cross Volunteer. He was nominated
in 2004 for the ACE (AKC Canine Excellence) Award in the Therapy Dog category. GUIDON IS CHIC certified: OFA Cardiac
echo normal at 6 years, thyroid normal (5 years), OFA hip Good (3 years), CERF & microchipped, DNA'd. Lost
when nearly 11 yrs. old to old age issues. 1999-2010. Guidon is AOM BISS Ch. MICHAELDANE JB DGN M T POCKETS
NTL x Ch. MICHAELDANE JB ADVENT, CD.

All Breed High In Trial CHROMA WHD ALLONS! UD TDI CCG "Dare" |
Guidon's young son Dare (shown above as a pup) sadly died of sepsis at 3 years
old. He hadjust recently debuted in obedience with owner Dina Whitehouse & had already made a big splash, going
High In Trial at an all breed show to finish his CD & then finished his CDX in two weekends, then "repeated
the feat" to finish his UD with 3 First Places before he turned three years old. Dare was also a working therapy
dog--a "veteran"as he went to work on his first birthday & made many visits to the military hospital
in his short life. To see more and read more about Dare, click on his photo or name. His
Harlequin sister Martine is the youngest ever Dane to Rally title (at 6 months) & now RE and CD titled.
2006-2009 We did not add any members of this litter to our breeding program, but they are a talented lot, so celebrate
them all the same. Their sire, Guidon, has his own page.

Venerable Dane, Ch. MICHAELDANE JB ADVENT,
CD, CGC, GDCA-VA (Versatility Award), TDI "Tia" |
This is our versatile and succcessful matriarch: Tia.
OFA hips & heart, thyroid normal, DNA certified. BISS CH Fraser of Michaeldane N'CO x Michaeldane JayBee
Rox Ann Dgn (Xani was a mjr ptd.CH Rox x CH Sugar daughter). Dam (or granddam, etc.) of the above dogs, plus
our beloved companion and successful competition Dane, CH/CD Tia was Specialty major ptd. from the puppy
classes & also won various Best Puppy & Sweeps awards. She was a certified, working TDI Therapy Dog as
of her first birthday, an AKC breed (conformation) Champion before her second birthday, and finished her Companion
Dog (obedience) title in three entries, with three first places, ending with a 195 & highest scoring Working
Dog for a Group win, and was ranked in the Top Ten Danes for Obedience for nearly two years. She received the honor
of the Versatility Award from the GDCA in 1998. Tia is moreover a typical dane: wonderful with people of
all ages & kind to all animals. She was bred twice, both times to Champion Harlequin males. Nearly up until
her death at 11 years and 11 months, she still worked occassionally as a therapy dog, was exhibited as a veteran,
plus kept up on community activities and kept her pack here in order, remaining the beloved matriarch and benevolent
dictator of the Chromadane pack. Born in February of 1995, she was fit all her life, never suffered from illness,
and was euthanized in January of 2007 for age-related issues associated with arthritis.
We're happy to add Tia is not only OFA hip clear & thyroid normal (at nearly 11 years old), but OFA Cardiac clear (also
tested as a veteran). All her children and grandchildren from her of ours (see above) also are CHIC-certified:
they are tested for hip, heart, thyroid & eyes; & all are titled as well. Tia was bred by Jodie Keim, Michael
Chiles & Trudy Muller. If the "clouds" photo above looks familiar, it's likely because our Tia
was chosen to be used as the Dane in the feature photo in the article on the Great Dane in the Jan2000 issue of
the AKC Gazette, as well as is included in Jill Swedlow's new book: "The Great Dane, Model of Nobility."

CHROMADANE: WORKING TYPE IN BLACK & WHITE
We are very serious about producing a working-style
Dane, a dog that is structurally secure, mentally able, and correct in type: a Dane that can endure, oblige and
look beautiful while doing it. We breed a "dual ring" & "heirloom"
Dane--like the estate dogs of old. Dogs of classic type. Dogs who behave in public. Dogs who can live OFF the leash
with grace and aplomb. Dogs who are good with other animals & generally smart and benevolent. Dogs who are
innately empathic and intuitive with people. Dogs who can live a healthy decade offering companionship that is
both low-maintenance & high in the happiness factor. Dogs who can also compete and win in various venues. We
typically keep 2 pups from each litter to grow out (for ourselves to breed/show) & generally sell the rest
of our litters on Limited as pet/performance companions.

be they shown to the public, titled (yet) or not. And we've many a happy companion fully fulfilled as a family

another one of the young, large, nearly all male & multi-colored<G>Dragon's Lair litter. He was already
titled by 15 months in obedience by his owner Jennifer Hogg. Falkor has two brothers (one each kept by the co-breeders)
pointed towards their Championships (see ZEN above). There is also another brother Prime
(Clrwks Chroma More Than Meets the Eye TDI CGC) who became a working, certified therapy dog at 15 months also,
and brother Wasabi had his CGC when only 4 months old (Falcor also got his before 6 months). We look forward to
seeing Falcor & his littermates in all their various adventures! All dozen pups arere much loved of course.

Lilly & Rene are two of the 12 pups from the 2008 Story Book Litter
(CanCH Von Ferden's Paradiso x CH CHROMA Turn The Page at Granite, RN, CGC). These two are good examples of
both the talent in the litter & the dedicated owners we are so grateful support our breeding program. Half
of the owners in this litter are out working on titles & certifications. Plus the litter at two can also boast
of an owner-handled Champion( Zebedee-- shown above) and two more brothers pointed towards their Championships
(Valentine & Vegas). CHIC health certifications pending in 2010. Color testing done on breed stock as well.

CHROMADANE: WORKING
TYPE IN BLACK & WHITE
The name "CHROMADANE" & OUR MOTTO: People often wonder where
the kennel name came from. Like many of the names chosen for our individual dogs, it's a double entendre. CHROMA
means "colored" (as well as purity/intensity) & we breed specifically spotted, or "colored"
Danes. Chromosomes literally means "colored bodies" & since we emphasize genetic health in our breeding
program, the idea of "spotty bodies" also implies we never forget about the unseen genetics of the thing.
To touch a spotted dog is traditionally thought to bring luck; we feel we've been blessed with our spotty bodies
& never want to forget that their general wonderfulness is how we ended up here in the first place. We breed
for a whole working dog--not exclusively a conformation animal, and exhibit ("show") as part of our assessment
of bloodstock--not as the reason for breeding it. Although we didn't originate this idea, we did pretty much coin
this term, the working-style Dane, and were in fact one of the first Dane kennels to articulate this as a breeding
program concept, & have been a pioneer of the practice of selecting breeding stock only that passed certification/titling
level examinations in all three arenas (of conformation, peformance and health). To that end, we are active trainers
and handlers, & we keep ourselves up to date on genetics, animal husbandry and other aspects of breeding &
training dogs: it's continuing education for a lifetime to do right by dogs if you are breeding them. We feel our
"take" on Danes is distinctive & the "look and feel" of our dogs is signature.
