We are very serious about producing a working-style
Dane, a dog that is structurally secure, mentally able, and correct in type: a Dane that can endure, oblige and
look beautiful while doing it. We breed an "Heirloom" Dane--like the estate dogs
of old. Dogs of classic type. Dogs who behave in public. Dogs who can live OFF the leash with grace and aplomb.
Dogs who are good with other animals & generally smart and benevolent. Dogs who are innately empathic and intuitive
with people. Dogs who can live a healthy decade offering companionship that is both low-maintenance & high
in the happiness factor. Dogs who can also compete and win in various venues. We typically keep 2 pups from each
litter to grow out (for ourselves to breed/show) & generally sell the rest of our litters on Limited as pet/performance
companions.

PUPPIES
![]()
If you would like to talk to us about our waiting list & your "wish puppy" please feel free to contact us. All our dogs are OFA hip, thyroid, CERF, & heart checked (& more). To read more about our kennel policies & procedures, click here. To read more about each individual dog click here. We happily provide breeder referral to the best of our ability.
We will provde details of upcoming breedings to interested parties, but do not always provide a publically available page for each such prospective breeding as it simply generates too much traffic via the website to then adequately manage. So please feel free to contact us if you want to inquire about future litters. Thank you.
We've been doing "Vollard-style" temperament testing on our puppies (bought, bred, etc.) since the 1970s. And we've done a "point system" structural analysis "ala Pat Hastings" on all our litters (as taught to us while in Germany). We also have breed type assessed in a formal manner. Each of these sorts of evaluations covers a different area (type, structure, temperament) essentially, and all are of some (but limited) usefulness. A successful breeder's eye on the pups routinely, plus the expert assessment of other successful breeders, likely means as much or more. But all such analysis "goes in the hopper" (as it were) in a careful evaluation of young stock & these evaluations are available to buyers. CH COLORWORKS SPOTANEOUS COMBUSTION This Champion Pirate daughter will be bred in 2008. Click on her photo for more information. |
Note please we list all litters, show all puppies in each of our litters, gather health, temperament and other data on all our pups, and make such litter details accessible. So not just the odd winner gets advertised to the public, but rather an overview of all produce/get is organized and made available to potential buyers as part of our comprehensive approach to breeding. Limited (nonbreeding) dogs from our breeding program routinely participate in competiton, work and health data assessment. Littermates, after all, do matter as to the genetic inheritance potential of the related individuals chosen for breeding.

CHROMADANE: WORKING TYPE IN BLACK & WHITE The name "CHROMADANE" & OUR MOTTO: People often wonder where the kennel name came from. Like many of the names chosen for our individual dogs, it's a double entendre. CHROMA means "colored" (as well as purity/intensity) & we breed specifically spotted, or "colored" Danes. Chromosomes literally means "colored bodies" & since we emphasize genetic health in our breeding program, the idea of "spotty bodies" also implies we never forget about the unseen genetics of the thing. To touch a spotted dog is traditionally thought to bring luck; we feel we've been blessed with our spotty bodies & never want to forget that their general wonderfulness is how we ended up here in the first place. We breed for a whole working dog--not exclusively a conformation animal, and exhibit ("show") as part of our assessment of bloodstock--not as the reason for breeding it. Although we didn't originate this idea, we did pretty much coin this term, the working-style Dane, and were in fact one of the first Dane kennels to articulate this as a breeding program concept, & have been a pioneer of the practice of selecting breeding stock only that passed certification/titling level examinations in all three arenas (of conformation, peformance and health). To that end, we are active trainers and handlers, & we keep ourselves up to date on genetics, animal husbandry and other aspects of breeding & training dogs: it's continuing education for a lifetime to do right by dogs if you are breeding them. We feel our "take" on Danes is distinctive & the "look and feel" of our dogs is signature. |
